Mit der gerade bei der British Museum Press erschienenen Publikation Artists making books: poetry to politics gibt Venetia Porter einen Einblick in die umfangreiche Sammlung von Künstlerbüchern des Museums.
Künstlerbücher werden oft als europäische Kunstform betrachtet, so berichtet Venetia Porter, ehemalige Kuratorin für islamische und nahöstliche Kunst und derzeit Honorary Research Fellow am British Museum und am Courtauld Institute of Art. In der Verlagsankündigung heißt es dazu: In the hands of an artist, a book can take on a radically different form, offering a novel means of expression. Studies of artists’ books often focus on those made in Europe and North America from the early twentieth century onwards, yet across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, artists have been creating books that tackle political and subversive themes, and demonstrate their passion for literary traditions or modern poetry, while also telling personal stories.
Die reich bebilderte Publikation zeigt Bücher von Künstlern aus Beirut bis Tunis, Damaskus und Lahore. Das Buch begleitet die Ausstellung Artists making books: poetry to politics, die im British Museum bis zum 18. Februar 2024 zu sehen ist.
