Jolly Jump Ups
Im Jahr 1939, zwei Jahre nach den ersten Stehauf-Bilderbüchern von J. F. Schreiber in Esslingen startete McLoughlin Bros. in New York die von der deutschstämmigen Familie Geraldine Clyne und ihrem Ehemann Ben Klein gestaltete Reihe The Jolly Jump-ups, in der bis 1948 zehn Werke Leben und Umfeld der Familie Jump-up als Ausdruck des american way of life in Szene setzten. Die Adaption der Schreiberschen Verlagserzeugnisse ist von der Abmessung über das Querformat mit Kopfbindung und dem unter den Bildern angeordneten Text offensichtlich. Der evidente Zusammenhang ist in amerikanischen Veröffentlichungen gleichwohl unbekannt, hier sind die Jolly Jump ups Wegbereiter eines neuen Formats (siehe zuletzt Ann Montanaro Staples Pop-up and movable books in The Routledge companion to picturebooks). Schön sind die jolly jump ups und die Schreiberschen Stehaufbilderbücher beide! Vojtěch Kubašta führte das Format dann ab den 1950er Jahren zu virtuoser Blüte.

In 1939, two years after the first stand-up picture books (Stehauf-Bilderbücher) by J. F. Schreiber in Esslingen, McLoughlin Bros. in New York launched The Jolly Jump-ups series, designed by the German-born family Geraldine Clyne and her husband Ben Klein, in which ten works up to 1948 staged the life and environment of the Jump-up family as an expression of the American way of life. The adaptation of Schreiber’s publishing products is obvious from the dimension about the landscape format with head binding and the text arranged below the pictures. The evidenced connection is nevertheless unknown in American publications, here the jolly jump ups are pioneers of a new format (see most recently Ann Montanaro Staples Pop-up and movable books in The Routledge companion to picturebooks). Beautifully, the jolly jump ups and Schreiber’s stand-up picturebooks both are! Vojtěch Kubašta then took the format to virtuoso heights beginning in the 1950s.
